WELLINGTON.

(I ROM OVB OWN CORRESPONDENT.) TE WHITI AND TOHU. The following telegram from New Plymouth appeared in the “Post,” of the Sth March, “from a correspondent:”—“The ‘Herald,’ referring to Te Whiti’s and Tohu’s release, says : ‘We think the Native Minister might have chosen another period of the year than the middle of March for their release. It was on the 17th of this month that Te Whiti used to hold his principal meeting, and the natives will no doubt look upon his returning at that time as due to supernatural power, rather than as an act of clemency on the part of the Government.’ ” It is patent now whence the “Post” receives its “ inspiration,” for the tenor of all the articles relative to Te Kooti and Tohu is the same and “after the mature consideration,” and after careful endeavors “to ascertain the present disposition of Te Whiti and Tohu and their friends, the Government have finally decided to recommend his Excellency the Governor to release the two Parihaka Prophets ! in the course of a few days, and permit their return to Parihaka,” vide “Post’s” leader and sub-paragraph of 7th March. Mr Bancke’s letter in the same issue is specially recommended to your readers’ attention. * And George Longhurst’s release is now the more imperatively demanded without the concession of any favor or mercy.
