The Rowing Club have reason to be grateful to the Union S. 8. Company. The freight of the two boats which arrived some lew days ago, amounted to some £6; but the companv, through its agent Mr Fraser, has signified to Mr Cresswell, secretary to the club, that they desire to make the sum a donation to the club. This to say the least of it is extremely generous.
About 20 minutes past eight this morning a sharp earthquake shock was experienced! It lasted about one or two minutes, and seems to have created no small amount of fun and excitement. A gentleman informs us that he was in the act of drinking a cup of coffee, when suddenly the contents of the cup were lodged in his lap ; his wife at the same time rushed outride, fearing that the house was about to topple over.
We recommend to our Resident Magistrates the following capital of ths way in which a Danish colonial magistrate, for whose exceptional character and ability it one suppressed in his court i —“ He said nothing of Ills method, but an English friend seated beside him on the Bench noticed that whenever a witness told palpable lie he jumped, He asked the reason, and the magistrate, after a caution, revealed his secret i —' My orderly stands behind the witness, and whenever I put my left hand to my ear that indicates that the evidence is false, and he runs a pin into him. ’ The ‘ sting of conscience ’ in this material form proved effectual and the magistrate, who died honored throughout Denmark, in three years turned an Alsatia into one of the most orderly communities. He could always get the truth. ”
The date of the ball to be held at Patutahi has been altered from the 22nd to the 27th inst. The 23rd being Good Friday, the original arrangement has been altered. A very wise regulation says the X Z, Timer has been issued in Adelaide which we commend to our own military authorities, prohibiting volunteers from smoking when prodeeding to or from parade. Nothing detracts so much from soldiery smartness as the tobacco pipe or cigar, accompanied as it is often is with the helmet pushed back, and possibly the stock unfastened.
