ABOUT TE KOOTI.

TO THE EDITOR. Auckland, 21st February, 1883. Sir, —I wish, through your columns, to assure the residents of Poverty Bay that they have the wide spread sympathy of all right • minded people throughout this part of the Colony in their indignation at the action of the Native Minister in pardoning that monster Te Kooti. When I tell you I have those in Gisborne that if any harm came to them through such brutes as Te Kooti, I would for the occasion act the bloodhound tq secure the capture and, death of the miscreant you may be sure that I am in earnest, I cannot see how the pardon can extend to Te Kooti when you consider that he has never been brought to trial. This amnesty may suit landsharks, but I thins you are full of them already. Your readers may be assured of this that their indignation was not uncalled for; and it must have proper weight in the coming session of Parliament. On my visit to Gisborne some time ago, I visited the cemetery where the unfortunate victims of Te Kooti lie. As I stood there I was deeply impressed with the enormity of the offence, and I mentally vowed that if ever it was my lot to come across the arch-fiend I would shoot him like a dog. I hope your member will protest strongly in Parliament against this miscarriage of justice, and he should be supported by petitions not only from Gisborne, but from all parts of the Colony.—Yours, etc., Joseph Lowndes.
