The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (limited), report, under date London, 10th Feb.:—"The wool salss commence on the 20th, and will include 280,000 hales frosh arrivals, and 15,000 bales old stock." On Saturday night, Captain Ito and the Officers of tbe Ringo were entertained at dinner at the Club. To-day they gave an afternoon dance on board to a large number of guests. This was followed by an excellent display of day firework. Another exhibition of fireworks takes place to-night, The Governor, accompanied only by his private secietary, left for the sou™ in the Ringarooma to-day. Walter Bishop, District President of the Druids, has left for Melbourne on business in eounectioa With the opening of lodges throughout the colony. A special telegram to the " Evening Post” from Nelson states that a serious fire is reported from Collingwood, Golden Bay. Yesterday morning Ellis’s store (James House), Pressing's (Miners’ Arms Hotel), and Stilliard's bakery were destroyed, together with nearly all their contents. The insurances, so far as is known are as follows Ellis’s stock (where the fire originated), £7OO in the United, £350 of which is re-insured in the Royal, and £lOO in the Norwich Union; Pressing, in the South British £5OO on the building, £2OO on the furniture, and £lOO on the stock. The total damage is reported to be £4,000.
GREYMOUTH, This day. Encouraging news has been received from Langdon's quartz claim, on the Taparoa Range, where, it is reported, a fine reef has been strack, running in a magnetic direction. It will require another week or fortnight to form an opinion as to its value. BLENHEIM, This day. An unexpected seam of coal in the Platon Coal Company's mine, five feet thick, and of excellent quality, has been found in the crosscut. There is great excitement caused by this discovery. It is expected to init the main seam in about 10 days. LYELL, This Day. John Davidson last night confessed to complicity in the murder of Denis Quinlan here on the night of the 28th of January last. A woman named Mary Grannaticaa is also in custody on the same charge. There is great excitement in consequence. The inquest was re-opened this morning ; there are no further particulars at present. The Court was just opened when the Coroner announced an adjournment for half-an-hour, as Mary Grannatioa is making a clean confession to the Inspector of Police, which is stated to be a little nearer the truth than that of Davidson. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The dead-lock in the Hospital medical staff has ended by the Board appointing Steward and Medvill surgeons ; Townsend and Guthrie physicians ; Frankish, physician for women and children, - and Wilkins, Opthalmio surgeon. Yesterday, Mr Caleb Whiteford, Resident Magistrate, made order hr C. E. Dudley, ex Town Clerk, Kaiapoi, to produce the missing rate books within fourteen days, failing which he would be committed to prison. The grain traffic has fairly set in, and from 8000 to 10000 bags daily are being car. riod to Lyttelton. Tfc® Govimor’s visit to Ohristohuroh The Governor arrived at Lyttelton this morning. On landing, he was met by the Mayor and Borough Councillors, and the members of the Harbor Board. The Lyttelton Navals furnished Guard of Honor, and a detachment of the Christchurch Artillery fired a salute. An address was presented by the Borough Council, and His Excellency briefly replied. After hearing a number of school children ring the National Anthem, he left by the special train for Christchurch. The people were enthusiastie j a triumphal arch was erected in front of railway station; several linos of flags across the streets, and bunting displayed from all the principal buildings. Most of the shops closed ; crowds ef people filled the streets at the railway station. The City Guards formed a guard of honor. A line was formed aerose the street in front of the station by the Fire Brigade, and the officials of the Friendly Societies, The Garrison and Hibernian Bands were in attendance.
On the arrival of the special train at 10.18 his Excellency was received by the Mayor and City Councillors, the Chairman and the members of the Selwyn County Council, and a large number of the principal eitizons. Addresses of welcome were read from the City Council and the Selwyn County Conneil, and the Friendly Societies, to which the Governor made suitable replies. He was then driven in an open carriage to tbe Cathedral Square, where the National Anthem Was sung by 400 public school children. His Excellency then proceeded to the Christchurch Club, where he will stay during his visit. KUMARA, This day. James Smart, miner, was, yesterday afternoon, accidentally carried down the sludge channel, and killed. An inquest will be held this afternoon.
