THE MUNICIPAL ELECTION.
Although the excitement during yesterday was not particularly marked, shortly after the close of the poll a large number of ratepayers assembled in the Gladstone road about, and near the Council Chambers, in order to hear the declaration. There seemed then to be intense interest as to the result, and bets were freely made as to the positions of the five candidates when all was over. About 7 o’clock, Mr Henry McKay, who acted as a substitute for the Returning Officer, appeared at the window and announced as follows I— James Brawn 121 Thomas Chrisp 106 Duncan Hepbum ~, ~, 103 William Adair ~, , 95 Samuel Mason Wilson 77 Informal Votes ... 4 The usual cheering followed as a matter of course. Mr Hepburn, a few minutes after the decduration, entered a protest against Mr Chrlep, on the ground that, at the time oi his nomination he was a contractor to the Borough Com I, and therefore his nomination was illegal.
