MURDER ON THE EAST COAST.
A deliberate murder of a Native Chief of high rank took place about seven or eight miles from Awanul, at a place known as Kiatia, on the 13th inst. From the particulars we have been enabled to gather it appears that a Native named Naira procured a double-barrelled gun from a whare occupied by another Native, which he carefully loaded. He came down a hill, and on arriving on the flat took deliberate aim at the chief Hamona. The ball went through the latter’s arm, entered his side, and passed out at the small of his back. Hamona lived about two hours after receiving the wound, and then succumbed to its effects. Naira also fired at another Native, but failed to hit him. No cause has been assigned for the deed. On the night previous the murderer appeared to be somewhat uneasy. After firing the two shots he made for the bush, with the gun and a lot of ammunition. He is being hotly pursued by the police. The murder was evidently premeditated, and as the constables are so cluse on his track it is to be hoped that in a very short time he will be brought to justice.
