Poverty Bay Standard. Published Every Evening. GISBORNE: FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1883.

It has been suggested to us that as the members of the Cook County Council have now only to meet once a month, that the best way to secure a quorum would be for the Councillors in turn to give a dinner party, and invite each brother Councillor. After the waiters had cleared away the viands, the business could then be proceeded with, and, to our mind, the idea, if somewhat original, might possibly be, if carried out, of benefit to the County. It is purely through the carelessness and negligence of the Cook County Council that that body has drifted into its present woeful financial position. There are a few who do deserve the thanks of those who elected them for their regular attendance and strict attention to matters brought before their meetings, but there are others, and we are sorry to have to say it, who had better at once resign, or else pay more attention to the duties of the positions to which they have been elected by the ratepayers. The negligence of those who do not attend tne meetings is altogether unfair to those who do, a.nd it has the effect of causing even those who would be good and faithful servants to become lax. Surely now that the meetings are held but once a month, some effort might be made on the part of the representatives of the ratepayers to be in attendance, and if they can’t do it, let men who can, take their places.
