An honest man. who ha. felt in duty bound to pay his debt., he. turned up in Invercargill. In 1868 he got into diffi<:ulti»», wee sold up by one of hie erdditor., and had nothing for the other.. Making a fresh .tart he now finds liimsell able to pay, and accordingly has forwarded cheques to each of those to whom in 1868 be owed an account. The following is an extract from the circular which accompanied the payment. : —“ T took a building contract at the Bluff in March, 1868, which should, under ordinary circumstances, have been completed in ten or twelve weeks. The wretched weather that wa. experienced that winter, and the diflicultiea that had to be ovci-i-otne in getting suitable local stone caused the contrac to extend till the following November, to my serious loss. One creditor would not wait till I could pay, and having obtained judgment against me sold everything I possessed except the bed clothes, which the law provides should not be sold. I convened a meeting of my creditors ; they
took bo tdvene action. I heard that they were satisfied that I had acted honeetly. Indeed, I shortly became bookkeeper to one of them. Two or three years ago I wrote oat cheques to pay an those old accounts ; but, on looking at my then engagements I withheld them. lam able to pay now, and have great pleasure in handing you a cheque in settlement of your account against me in 1868.”
