The Auckland “ Star” says : —Some Dunedin people, who must be very great wits indeed, if there is truth in Dryrdan’e words that *‘ great wits are sure to madness near allied,” have projected a new comic paper the first number of which has reached us. Its title is “ Toddy, ” and as its makesits debut immediately after the New Year holidays, the name is just a trifle suggestive of the source from which the idea emanated’ and of the fount whence its literary inspiration has been drawn. But it would be a libel on the favorite beverage of the hard-headed denizens of the Southern Capital to assume that genuine whisky-toddy has had any snare in the manufacture of the extremely wishy-whisky jokes which burden the pages of .the new publication, for has not Burns, who will be accepted as an authority on the subject declared :— “ Leeze me on drink, —it gin’s us mair Than either schule or cotlego ; it kin’les wit, and waukense lear. And pangs us fu’ o’ knowledge. ’’ The illustrations of “Toddy” are about on a par with its letterpress : and we have no hesitation in pronouncing it to be the funniest paper which has ever been brought under our notice. The cartoon represents Pat. Sandy, and John Bull, tugging with might and main at a car, which is supposed to represent the new journalists venture, meanwhile uttering hopeful and defiant remarks in reply to the croaking of a sprite of civil omen, who hovers above and declares that they will never get the car along. Though three to one seems heavy odds, most people we fancy, will incline to back the prophetic powers of the bird of evil omen’’ against those of John, Pat, and Sandy.
