The Waerenga-a-hika tea meeting, in aid of the school building fund, will not be held on the 31st of January as previously announced, but on the "th of February next. This alteration has taken place in order to gain more time, and make the entertainment a perfect success. Mr Sutton, M.H.R, for Hawkes Bay, has (says a contemporary) “ let off ” a good joke. In proposing the toast of the “Municipal Corporations of New Zealand ” at the dinner to the Fire Brigade delegates, held at Napier recently-, Mr Sutton said :—“ That throughout his public life, though he had been a member of nearly everylother local governing body, he had never had the honor of beiug connected with a corporation.” Roars of laughter followed this remark when Mr Sutton corrected himself by tapping the lower part of his waistcoat and saying “ excepi this one.”
The following are the names and sentences of the prisoners who were recently sent from Napier, to be detained at Mount Cook, Wellington, during the remainder of their respective terms Alexander Chase, convicted of forgery, two years’ imprisonment : Tumati Tupara, manslaughter, seven years ; Antoine Martin, horse stalling, three years ; James Conway, h irse stealing, two years; Heremia, forgery, one year; Eruora te Whatanui, horse stealing, prison breaking, and larceny, three years. It is estimated that when the Sydney Town Hall is completed it will have cost at least £200,000, or about £2 per head of the total population of the city. Mr F. Fox desiires that when persons wish to purchase lands from Native residents on the East Coast, they will come themselves, and not bring agents with them, as the Natives do not wish to be bamboozled.
