DEATH OF VON FLOTOW.

The death of this distinguished musician was announced in our columns on Saturday. The following is taken from “ Men of the Time:” — Flotow, Frederick Ferdinand Adolphus von, composer, born at Tenterdorf, in Mecklenburg Schwerin, April 27, 18111, was intended for the profession of diplomacy. His- fondness for music induced him to go to Paris, where lie placed himself uuder the composer Keicha. The revolution of 1830, recalleo him to Germany, whence he returned a few years later with several operas composed by him during the interval. None of these, however, found favor with the Parisian managers, and it was only the impression they produced by their representation in private before amateurs that obtained for him the commission in 1838, to furnish the music to “Le Naufrage de la Meduse” This at once established his position, the opera being successful. Since that time he has composed several, of which the “Forrester,” produced in 1840; “L’Esclave de Camoens,” in 1843, and L’Aine en Peine,” in 1846, hold possession of the French stage ; while “ Stradella.” in 1844, “ Martha,” in 1858, ami “ Zilda,”in 1866, established his reputation in Germany as a composer of light operas. “ Indra,” “ Rubezahl,” and “ Marie-Katerina,” are favorites in Germany. After residing in Paris and in his native town, M. Flotow settled in 1855 at Schwerin where he became director of the Court Theatre. He was elected
