Messrs Garrett Bros., in addition to thentannery at the Whau, appear to have started a whale fishery, two of these monsters of the deep having been caught within a fortnight. It is the same old story, “to him that hath much shall be given; but to him that hath not shall be taken away the little that he hath.” We never find any whales fooling around the Standard Office, but sometimes we have to interview shirks.

Woodyear and Ross’s Australian Circus, after a successful tour in the South, will shortly unfurl their canvass in Auckland. Mr R. Love the agent, who arrived by the Hawea (says the Star) informs us that a number of new attractions have been added to the show, including an armless lady who writes with her toes, an elephant, and several lady riders. Under date of 23rd January, the Engineer of the Southern Croos Petroleum Company reports that the ground in the shaft is free from any great extent of clayey portions and the strata more defined and of a compact nature. He, therefore, suggests that boring operations should be commenced. The formation of the strata is trending due west at an angle of 45 degrees. The bottom is quiet, with no increase of water. Three casks of crude petroleum have arrived in Gisborne, two of which will be forwarded to other parts of the Colony. The Board meets on Monday to decide plan of future operations.

The Hon. James Williamson, M.L.C., and Thos. Russell, Esq., are at present in Gis- ! borne, and it is said, and we believe on good I grounds, that they are taking a big interest j in the New Zealand Land Settlement Co. . The annual general meeting of the Southern '■ Cross Petroleum Company will take place at I the Argyle Hotel on Wednesday, the 14th of February next. The business before the meeting will be to receive the directors’ report and annual statement of accounts, and to elect directors in place of those retiring. A young lady (says the San Francisso Post) created considerable comment by appearing at a fancy ball recently in the character of a “ raw oyster.” Her costume was a sprinkle of red pepper, and she carried a cracker in one hand and half a limo in the other. Well may the anxious moralist nsk ; “ Whither are we drifting r” | Mr Archibald Forbes has a rival in Captain W. Jackson Barry, who was advertised to make his last appearance at Blenheim, the subject being ' V Tour round the World ; Kings and Chiefs 1 have met ; Cannibals I have seen.” The Auckland “ Free Lance"’ is responsible for the following : —“Mr Locke, of Napier, is at present on a visit to Auckland. We are pleased to see he has recovered his pristine health and vigor. We hear it is his intention to again contest the East Coast seat at the next election. ” We are of opinion that i Mr Locke if seeking a seat in Parliament I will select some other constituency as the I Poverty Bay Electoral District will, in all j probability, retain a member who has fought so well for it.

Professor Allen, the noted magnetic healer, has arrived in Gisborne, and by the request of many of the inhabitants of the Borough, will deliver an open air address from his carriage, between Messrs Parnell and Boylan’s Hall, and Mr W. Adair’s premises, Gladstone road, about half-past 7 o’clock this evening. Persons suffering from any form of disease, will do well to consult the Professor at the Albion Club Hotel.— [Advt.] The 23rd call of 2d. per share is now due to the manager of the Southern Cross Petroleum Company, and is payable to him at the Company’s office on Wednesday, the 14th February next. We are particularly requested to remind shareholders that unless they pay up their calls they will be debarred from voting at the meeting of the 14th proximo, and their shares will be forfeited and sold if the amounts due thereon are not paid on or before that date. We would call the attention of our readers to the fact that they can get VALENTINES of every description at the London Arcade, —(Advt). Mr R. Hill Fisher, the Manager for the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency, will sell by public auction on the 22nd February next, a valuable lot of sheep, cattle, and horses, at the farm of Mr D. G. McKay, at the Te Arai. We notice from our advertising columns, that Mr William Sievright, of Wellington, and Mr C. A. De Lautour, of Gisborne, have entered into partnership as Barristers, Solicitors, and Conveyancers, their offices being on the ground floor of Mr J. Townley’s Buildings, Gladstone road. The Conference which was to have been held on Tuesday, the 30th inst., relative to the slaughter-house question has been postponed until Thursday, the Ist of February, when all persons interested in the question are invited to be in attendance, A Melbourne paper says that the Hon. Ivo Bligh’s debut in the field was watched with peculiar interest. His lanky figure could never be mistaken. He has all W. G-. Grace’s form at point, and obtained two tremendous rounds of cheering for stopping real hot = ones. i Mr J, 0. Barnard, the Inspector of Sur’ veys, advertises that tenders for repairs to • the Ormond-Opotiki road will close on Friday next, and that the plans and specifications may be seen at the Survey Office. The successful competitors in the prize cup firing will be kept in suspense until Monday, as the handicap will not be made known until then. Shareholders in the South Pacific Petro’ leum Company are notified that a call of 3d’ per share has been made, and is payable on or before the 14th February next, at the Company's Offices in Sydney or Gisborne. The nominations for the annual election for members of the Gisborne Licensing District takes place at the Makaraka Hall on the 7th of February next, at 12 o’clock noon, when I nominations will be received for candidates j for five seats in the above Licensing District. We would call attention to the fact that Professor Allen, the marvellous curer of all kinds of diseases, will meet the Gisborne people to-night, betweeen Parnell and Boylan’s Hall, and Mr W. Adair’s emporium, Gladstone road, in a trap. From all we can learn of the Professor, he is certainly a wonder, judging from all the cures which he is said to have effected. We have no doubt that those of the Gisborne people who stand in need of the relief which lie is said to afford for a variety of aiments will avail themselves of the Professor’s healing powers. The Professor will appear in one of Mr S. M. Wilson’s carriages, and as this kind of exhibition is ' somewhat novel to Gisborne, we have no ■ doubt that a large number of persons will ; avail themselves of the opportunity of hearing a dissertion on the powers of healing the sick and afflicted. The Professor will be glad to attend to .any patient who desire to seek his advice if they will call at the Club Hotel.

We are very pleased to see that a company established in Australia called the Australian Vinegrowers’ Company, have opened an agency in Auckland for the purpose of introducing their wines into this Colony. This is a thing that has long been wanted in New Zealand, as there is no doubt but that in a warm climate like ours a palateable light wine is much more beneficial than quantities of malt liqurs. We believe the hotel-keepers here are taking the matter up, as in Auckland, and must express a hope that the company will achieve that success which they so thoroughly deserve. We were favored by Mr Munroe, the travelling agent, with a bottle of chiraz. The wine is somewhat new, and therefore fruity, but is extremely palatable, and gives proof that it is the pure juice of the grape. It is only recently that we mentioned the high estimation that Australian wines were held in on the Continent, and the sample we tasted equals in flavor, although perhaps not in age, any of the foreign wines imported. We feel assured that the Company will find a ready sale throughout New Zealand, as the quality of the article is its own recommendation. “ After this season the deluge is over, 5 was the remark of one of the most prominent players of the Australian eleven after the late match with the Hon. Ivo Bligh’s team. To such an extent is the absurdity of cricketing become that many people b gin to look upon it as a kind of insanity demonstrated, because eleven men can play a game better than t' eir fellows. There is some talk on the Sydney and Melbourne sides of sending to the Old Country a boy that can pass the Sixth Standard in our Education System, or a Champion ring-taw marble player.
