(BY CABLE.—BEUTEB’S TELEGRAMS). MELBOURNE, Jan. 24. Arrived—This afternoon : The P. and O. steamship Indus, with the inward mail* via Suez and Brindisi, dated London, Dooembsr 15th. Sailed—This afternoon: Union Co.'s steamship Wairarapa, for the Bluff. The Melbourne manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand (Limited) reports local market* as follows Wheat firm at 6s Id ; malting barley very strong ot 4s 9d to 5s 2d. New Zealand oats, feeding qualities, worth 3s 3d ; milling ditto, 4. Quotations for seed nominal. At their wool sale* to-day Messrs Goldsboro and Co., Limited, sold 1700 bales. The competition was brisk, and there was a large attendance of buyers. Fine qualities were in very good demand; greasy wools realised up to 12Jd, and scoureato 20d.
This Day. The Union Steam Company of New Zealand have sent to Adelaide to claim the gold which was found amongst the effects of the deceased steward of the Tararua.
A aeries of tests of Wood’s and Westinghouse’s railway brakes will take place to-day.
