The defeat of Bishop Moran in his candidature for the Peninsula gives additional proof of the satisfactory working of the present Educational system. Secular education is one thing, and denominational education another thing. The State provides the one which is free to all, let the various churches provide the other. A boy can learn that twice two make four without a Bible before him ; he can pass over the “ pons assinorum,” or the fifth proposition of the first book of Euclid, without having to offer up a prayer; he can acquire knowledge which will fit him to fighi the every day battle of life without offering up grace for what he is about to receive. Let the ministers do their work as well as the State is doing its ; let them see that the children oi parents belonging to their respective religions attend their Sunday Schools, and if once a week is not sufficient to inculcate religion in their youthful minds, let them devote an hour or so, either two or three days during the six working days, moruing or afternoon. Let them do this, and let the masters appointed by the State cultivate the bram of the children under their control. It was only a short time back in Victoria a great outcry was made about the necessity: for Bible reading in schools, and after some time the concession demanded was granted. What was the consequence’ r This, after a spasmodic display ol energy only one clergyman was found at his post when three months had elapsed. Bishop Moran’s theory is that a grant should be made by thi Government for the education ol Roman Catholic children by Homan Catholic teachers. However* much thia may be wished for by Bishop MoßAlf, it is altogether impracticable at present, and we are of opinion that it will never become un fait accompli,
