Mr J. Pilbrow’s cracks Welcome Jack, Clarence and Canard, under Mr Lunn’s care, and Minerva and Poet, the property of Mr G. Bates, under Wattie’s care, were on board the s.s. Ringarooma, bound south, on Saturday afternoon last. The Napier Telegraph says :—“ Mr G. He slop desires us to mention that he has not nominated Tidal Wave for the Poverty Bay races, and cannot account for the horse’s name appearing in the published list otherwise than that some person has taken it upon him to have it placed there without consulting the owner.” We may mention that Tidal Wave was not entered in Mr Heslop's name for our annual races, but in that of Mr Ruddock, Welcome Jack has now a penalty of 91b in the Dunedin Cup, which raises hia weight to Bst 31b, Not too much for him to carry. Welcome Jack is proving himself the horse of the season, for it seems that he only needs to be started to win. The various handicaps in which he has run, have as yet failed to show his limits, though they have been amply sufficient to prove what am excellent horse he is. The apparent crusher in the Wellington Cup, which so riled his owner, as to induce him to accompany his notice of scratching by a most impertinent telegram, was after all not far off the mark, and were the handicap to be framed now. and by a different committee, he would certainly have some more piled on to him. It will be seen by reference to telegrams that at the Auckland Meeting he won the Cup and Railway Plate, on the first day, without a spell between the two events. On the second day, the Derby and Racing Club Handicap fell to him, while on the third he contented himself with the Auckland Plate. He has proved himself good at all distances, while the time proves that he was not by any meanu in bad company, excepting, of course, the Derby.— N. Z. Mail. Novel Racing Dispute. A story which reaches the “ Court Circular ” from India is worth recording. At a recent race meeting up the country three horses were entered to start for the principal cup, owned by persons whom we willt call A, B, and C. Now, one of the conditions made by the giver of the prize was that not less than three horses should compete for it. It appears, however, that A had backed B’s horse for a large sum, and B had donu the same thing as regards A’s animal, while C had laid largely against his own mount. On the morning of the race A produced a veterinary certificate to the effect that his horse was unfit to run ; he, however, said, that in order not to deprive the two competitors of the chance of winning the cup, he should start his horse and pull him up at the end of a hundred yards. B determined to wait on A; but finding this method of no use, since the former’s horse was brought to a standstill, he caused his own mount to bolt out of the course. Consequently C. was bound to ride over and win against his own interests ; but he was not to be outwitted. In gallopping along he surreptiously extracted and threw away some of his weight. Consequently, when he returned to scale, vehemently asserting that he had been cheated by A and B, he was found to be 71b too light. To this day it is not decided who really won the enp, and consequently alj bets made on the event remain unsettled, (PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Wellington Rae s. WELLINGTON, This Day.
