CRICKET.-Gisborne v. Wairea.
This mutch was played at Wairoa last Wednesday. The wicket prepared was in first-class condition, and the weather was all that could be desired, The Wairoa team provided a very excellent picnic lunch for the teams the ground, which was fully done jtSff tice to by both sides. Wairoa had not been able to get some of their best bowlers down, so in the bowling line they were rather weak. In the batting the only ones who made anything of a stand J. Sim in the first innings, who played most carefully and patiently tor his 27, and then had the rather bad luck to be run out by a very smart piece of fielding by Bloomfield, who returned the ball sharply to Day at the wickets, and Strachan and Gardiner in the second innings. For the Gisborne team, Bloomfield in his first innings played very well for his 80, hitting hard and straight and playing genuine cricket. In the Gisborne second nings, things looked very blue whfl there were four wickets down for 17 runs, and 34 more wanted to win. A. Rees shewed some pretty play for his 12, and together with Lusk, helped very materially to turn the match in favor of Gisborne. Lusk played the innings of the day, making 27 not out, in first-class form, not letting off a 1 loose ball. His bowling was also very effective, he taking 6 wickets in 18 overs for 20 runs in the first innings, and 4 wickets in 9 overs for 11 runs in the second innings. A. Bees and Bloomfield also bowled well for Gisborne For Wairoa, Gardiner and Flint about divided the palm. Gisborne won eventually by five wickets. ( The following are the scores: Wairoa Ist Innings.
