[per united press association]. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. At a special meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council on Saturday morning, the financial committee, who had been making a special audit of the Municipal accounts, reported that three sets of ratebooks and balance-sheets, for the year 1877 were missing, and that they could, not complete their work, as the books and papers of the Council were in a most disgraceful state. When they found that state of things in existence, they had summoned the Mayor, who had immediately suspended the clerk, and taken charge of the office. The committee considered that the auditors had been grossly negligent as to their work which had not been done. They also reported that so far as they could ascertain there was a deficiency of sums amounting to £550, extending over a period of four years. It is reported that the Town Clerk, C, E. Dudley, after being suspended by the Mayor, had sent in his resignation. The Council decided not to acaept his resignation, and to take proper measures under the Act for ousting the auditors from office. AUCKLAND, This Day. Thirty-five persons are now awaiting their trial at the Supreme Court Sessions, and when the list of country cases is in, it is expected there will be forty altogether. Five omnibuses have been engaged to take the lot, with an escort, to the Court House on the first day, as it is not known against whom the Grand Jury will first return true bills. News was received in town yesterday that
the s.s. St. Kllda broke down off Brighton, while on hex- way from here to Wanganui. At 10 o’clock last night the tug Dispatch loft here to go to her assistance. WELLINGTON, This day. The Agent General wires that the Albion Shipping Company's ship Wild Deer, for Glasgow to New Zealand, was wrecked at Belfast. The representatives of the Pacific Mail Company have arrived here to interview Government respecting the continuation of the San Francisco Mail Service. The value of Wool exported from Wallington last quarter wss £186,800. The Duncraig barque, 94 days from London, is at the Heads. WANGANUI, This day. Tawhiao left early this morning for Waugaehu, where a great reception awaits him. Arrangements nave been made by a number of gentlemen to give him a private banquet; but the Mayor received a telegram from Mr Bryee, discountenancing a public reception, and on hearing of this the Natives say he became offended and left. He proceeds next to Foxton, Wairarapa, and back to Waikato via Hawke’s Bay.
