Poverty Bay Standard. Published Every Evening. GISBORNE: FRIDAY, JANUARY 12, 1883.
A letter, which appears in another column, is to be forwarded to the Hon. the Minister of Justice, by to-morrow’s mail, signed by the members of the legal profession practicing in Gisborne. It has reference to the evils which will inevitably ensue if the District Court Office is removed. The letter is clear and explicit, and deals seriatim with the manifold disadvantages which Poverty Bay would have to labour under if the office was shifted. With the gentlemen of the long robe in this matter we are in unison, and on behalf of the public thank them for the prompt manner in which they have sought to avert that which necessarily must entail both loss and inconvenience to the settlers in this District. It is needless for us to further review the subject, as the difficulties likely to arise are plainly put forth in the letter to be sent. It is clearly shown that whilst the Government would lose nothing by retaining the office in Gisborne, the general public would suffer considerably. We trust that the Minister of Justice will seethe force of the arguments used, and adopt the suggestions of the legal gentlemen who have addressed him.
