(BY CABLE.—REUTER’S TELEGRAMS). MELBOURNE, Jan. 10. At their wool sale to-day, Messrs Goldsborotigh and Co. (Limited), offered 3,300 bales ; 2,375 were sold at satisfactory prices. Superior greasy realised up to Is 3Ad, and good scoured up to Is lOd. The Melbourne bakers threaten to strike for an increase of wages. Wheat is steady at 4s 9d to 4s lid for shipping. Malting barley scarce, and firm at 4s 3d. New Zealand oats weak and irregular ; milling sorts worth 2s lOd to 4s Id. The failure of the loan in the London market is a complete surprise, and the subject is the topic of general interest at the present moment. Sir William Jervois, who arrived from Adelaide by the steamship Clyde last night, Mill proceed by her to Sydney, and thence to Wellington by the Wakatipu. This day. The failure of the Victorian loan in London is attributed to the high minimum which is believed to have determined on wholesale applications. it is stated that the Colonial Treasurer is hopeful that the balance of the loan will be subscribed by Monday next. The local press condemn the delay which occurred in issuing the loan, thus losing a favorable opportunity in the London market. Lady Jervois is at present indisposed and will remain on board the steamship Clyde, instead of proceeding overland to Sydney. SYDNEY, Jan. 10. The re-electim for East Sydney of Mr. G. H, Reid, Minister of Public Instruction, will be opp; sed by Mr Alfred Elkington. The programme which is about to be laid before the Legislative Assembly by the new Government embraces the amendment of the Land Liws, the Civil Service Act, reform of the Criminal Law*, and a provision for a large measure of local self Government.
