A warder named Saunders, at St. Helena Penal Establishment, Moreton Bay, was out In a boat with a prisoner nazned Nairn. The latter having got out of the boat at the pier, the warder in following w’aa climbing up the jetty when his feet slipped and he fell, striking his head on the boat. H e was stunned, and fell into the water. He sank, and was being carried away by the tide when the prisoner plunged in after him. He dived for the warder, and got him 12 y ards away from the boat, swam back to the Ji Jtty, lashed the warder to it, and called for help. The warder was subsequently restored to consciousness. The prisoner is undergoing a sentence of 10 years’ penal servitude, half of which term he has served. This is the fourth life this prisoner has saved.—Melbourne “ Age.”
