The following are the results of the Victoria Racing Club’s New Year's Day Meeting, held at Flemington to-day :— Hurdle Race, about 24 miles. Duringall ... ... ... 1 Lady Hampton ... ... 2 Cracksman ... ... .3 Time, 4mins. 53|secs. Basilisk and Gambler also started. Cracksman got away fisrt, and let until coming into
the straight, when he was collared at the last hurdle by Lady Hampton and Duringall. The two last had a splendid race to the post, Duringall eventually leading at the finish by a length, with Cracksman several lengths behind the second horse. Yabbaville Stakes, 1 mile. Boolka ... ... ~.1 Solitude ... ... 2 Little Jack ... ... ... 3 Time, Imin, 40secs, Sinking Fund also ran, The race was well contested throughout. Solitude led at the start, but was soon caught and passed by Boolka, who was first past the winning post by three lengths, after a good race up the straight. Similar distances separated the other horses. Normanby Stakes, 6 furlongs, Archie ... ... 1 Warrick ~, ... ~, 2 St, Lawrence ... 3 Time, Imin. 44sees, The other starters were Middlemarch, Statesman, Cupidon, Waselight, Tichbourne, Off Colour, and Narina, St. Lawrence led at first, closely followed by Statesman and Warrick, until the straight was reached ; utter a grand race Archie and Warrick drew ahead with the whole field close behind them. Archie was cleverly landed half a length in front at the post, with the others well up. Mid-Summer Handicap, 1J miles. Odd Trick ... ... ~, 1 Leoilu ... ... ... 2 Mistaken ... 3
Time, 3mins. 6, secs. The other starters were Sweet William, Coriolanus, Pollio, Zambesi, Kohinaroo, Balthazar, Tapir, Lapstone, and Tanworth. At the fall of the flag Mistaken went to the front, but was soon collared by Lapstone, who, in turn, had to surrender the lead to Kohinaroo. Up the straight Odd Trick came forward with a grand rush, finishing with Leoila half a length behind, and Mistaken a good third. Champion Stakes, of 25sovs. each, 10 sov ft. with 1000 added. For three-year-olds and upwards. Weight for age. The second horse to receive 200 sovs. and the third 100 sovs. out of the stake. Three miles. Mr W. Pearson’s b h Commotion, 4yrs, 9st ... ... ... ... 1 Sir T. Elder’s ch c Guesswork, 3yrs, 7st 81b ... „ 2 M' E. Mestre’s bl c Navigator, 3 yrs, 7 t 81b 3 ” Commotion was ridden by Trahan, Guesswork, by Cracknell; and Navigator, by Haise. The other starters were Segcnhoe, Calwa, and Jessie. The race was a grand one and keenly contested by Guesswork and Commotion. The first named led from the start, and continued to do so past the Stand and round to the back of the course. At the abbattoirs Jessie took secor. d place from Commotion, but on passing the Stand the second time, Commotion had again secured place, Guesswork still leading the field ; that ordei was maintained to the Abattoirs again, when Navigator took second place. Coming up the straight Guesswork and Commotion were leading together, the latter having come up with a fine spurt, followed by Navigator ; the three were very close together along the straight, and, after a grand race, Commotion landed winner by a neck; Navigator being close on to the second horse. Time, Smins. 26secs.
The Three-Year-Old Handicap was won by Magnet; Anglesy, 2nd; The Plunge, 3rd. The other starters were Bassanio, Transferred, King of the Vale, Contessina, Colstoun, Essex, and Colworth. It was a good race. King of the Vale led to the straight, but then fell back. Time, 2mins. 394sece. The Criterion Stakes was won by Ike ; Hopetown, 2 ; Watigunyah, 3. Time, Imin. 21fsecs. There were about 25,000 spectators on the course, and the weather was fine and cool.
Auckland. R»c|i. Derby.—Welcome Jack non. Kingask was the only other starter. Time, 3min 9sec. Publicans’ Purse.—Piscatorious, 1; Minerva, 2. A.R.C. Handicap.—Welcome Jack, 1; Poet, 2 ; Libeller, 3. Time, 3min 7sec. Grand Stand Handicap.-Libeller, 1 ; Piscatorious, 2 ; Kenilworth, 3. Nursery Handicap, 100 sovs, 6 furlongs. Smith’s Rubina, Bst lOlbs, 1 ; George's Nelson, Bst 91bs, 2 ; Adams’ Mitraullex, Sst, 3 ; no other starters. Rubina led at the start, Nelson last. Nelson subsequently obtained second position, Rubina winning by a length. Time, 1 min 16$ secs. Totalisator dividend, £1 Ils. $ Goodman has withdrawn complaint re foul riding on Boxing Day. Auckland Plate, £2OO ; 2 miles—Welcome Jack, 7st lllbs, 1 ; Minerva, 7st 81bs, 2 ; Maori, Ost olbs, 3. Kalo also ran. 20 to lon Jack was offered, but no takes. Jack led from the start to the finish, winning as lie liked, Minerva a length behind ; time, 3.47. Totalisator dividend 2 guineas. Steeplechase—Canard, 1 ; Clarence, 2 ; Mount, 3. Trieotrin, New Year, Chandler, St Switnin, and Misfortune also ran. New Year had the race in hand, but fell at the second to the last hurdle. Canterbury Rases. Welter Handicap.— Blue Jacket, 1 ; Whitbach, 2 ; The Curate, 3. Two Year Old Handicap.—Helena, 1 ; Water Nymph, 2. Christchurch Cur.—Bundoora, 1; Tasman, 2 ; King Quail, 3. Spring Handicap.—Tasman, 1; Emir Bey, 2; Iris, 3.
