SIR THOS. BRASSEY ON THE ARMY AND NAVY.
Sir Thomas Bkasshv, speaking at a banquat to the Lord Mayor of London at Rye> said we were all sensible that it was impossible for a country to exercise great influertefe and to promote the best interests bf civilisation unless it Was know n that her counsels cduld be supported, if flecessary, by the force of her army and navy. The contest which had taken place in Egypt had been the means of testing the efficiency of our services ( under altered conditions. The navy had beert brought for the first time into action with the newly-constructed ironclad vessels, the result of great ingenuity and expenditure, aud it was satisfactory to know that theae ships had turned out to be effective engines of destruction. In the also, greM changes had taken place consequent bn .this short service system. H« thought wh had found that this system had proved an effective means of raising men at short notice which otherwise would be impracticable, The Lord Mayor, in responding to the toast of his health, expressed confidence thit this Corporation of London would continue tb i rule the municipal life of England.
