(BY CABLE.—BEUTBR'B TILEOKAM*). MELBOURNE, Dec. 23. The musical festival was opened this evening by His Excellency the Marqui* of Normanby. A large number of persons, including members of both Houses of Parliament, were present. The Intercolonial Cricket Match between the representative team of Victoria and New South Wales, commenced here to-day. The weather was very fine, and a capital wicket was pitched, the ground being in good order. The Victorians went first to the wickets, and were all disposed of for 148 runs. At the close of the day’s place the New South Wales team had lost 1 wicket for 76 runs.

December 26. The oratorio of the Messiah was performed at the Choral Festival last night, and waa a great success. The audience numbered fully 800 persons, and the band and chorus 1400. The cricket match between the Victorian and New South Wales Elevens was resumed to-day, when the visitors, with 1 wicket down and 76 runs to their credit, continued their first innings, which closed for a total of 257. The highest scores were—A. Bannerman 78, W. L. Murdoch 71, and Spofforth 31. At the close of the day’s play the Victorians, in their second innings, had scored 60 for the loss of 1 wicket. ADELAIDE, Dec. 23. The South Australian wool clip for the present season is valued at £1,030,000, being a decrease of £114,000 compared with last year.
