(BY CABLE.—REUTER'S TELEGRAMS). MELBOURNE, Dec. 82. Subscriptions for the widows aud orphans of miners who lost their lives at Creswick, now amount to £16,750. A fresh outbreak of water occurred to-day in the Australasian Mine at Creswick. Six men who were at work underground at the time escaped somehow with considerable difficulty. This Day, Mauritius advices to Dec. 6 report that at that date shipments were ready as follows ; —Dunedin, 200 tons sugar ; Lyttelton, 150 tons. SYDNEY, Dec, 22. A party oi Astronomers, who are sta. tionea at Lord Howe Island, off the Coast of this Colony, arrived here to-day. They did not succeed in the intended observations of the Transit of Venus. New Zealand wheat advanced during the week to 4s 4d, and New Zealand oats to 3s 6d ; maize remains at 5s per 60 lbs, and sugar (Companys No, 2), pieces remain at £35 per ton. ADELAIDE, Deo. 21. Wheat continues quiet at 4s lOd ; town flour quoted at £ll 15s, decline of 15s during the week. Country brands £lO, decline of 20s. Freights to the United Kingdom from Adelaide, 35s to 38s ; freights for wool; greasy, 3s 4d ; scoured, 5s 8d ; freight market is weaker.
