(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) NAPIER, This day. In the case of Johnson v. D. McKay, the Jury, after 6 hours’ retirement, were unable to agree, and were accordingly discharged. K incraig has been scratched for all his Boxing Day Jockey Club engagements. [per UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION]. WELLINGTON, This Day. Owing to there only being two Ministers here, and no acting Governor; the usual weekly meeting of the Executive Council could not be held. Mr H. C. Wilmer, formerly DeputyRegistrar of the Supreme Court, and lately acting A.D.C. to Sir James Prendergast, has died from heart disease, from whlcn he has long been suffering.
FOXTON, This Day. A serious fire occurred here at one this morning, when Mr J. Williams’s store was burned to the ground, and all the stock de* stroyed. The stock is estimated at over £2OOO. The building was a very old one, and was insured for £250. The origin of the fire is a complete mystery. George Wil* liams, the proprietor’s brother, sleeps on the premises, and when he retired at eleven last night everything was safe. The fire was no sooner observed than the whole building was a mass of flame, preventing any one approaching it. Only a few pounds of tobacco was saved. The Primitive Methodist Church, on the site of the old Custom House, on the south side, was saved with difficulty, there being fortunately no wind at the time, The correct insurances are—South British, £5OO ; and National, £1,250, of which £5OO is reinsured in the Scottish Imperial, and £250 in the United, making the net loss of the National Company £ooo.
AUCKLAND, This Day. The Colonial Secretary has given permission to exhume the bodies of Hamilton and a child, w’hich will be done to-morrow. Several serious incendiary fires are reported from Cambridge.
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Ten trout, weighing in the aggregate 40| lbs., were taken by the rod in a single day in the Selwyn river. NAPIER, This Day. The Bishop of Waiapu writes to the “Herald” in reference to Mr Sheehan’s letter about Arthur Mill, stating that he accompanied Mr Mills on the only occasion that that gentlemen visited Rotomahana, and that Mr Sheehan must be mistaken in his recollection of what occurred. DUNEDIN, This Day. An open verdict was returned regarding the Milton Pottery fire. The works are to be abandoned and the Company wound up. This decision being mainly caused by tne unreasonable demands of the skilled men who require an advance of wages to about 70 per cent over home rates. TIMARU, This Day. So far, the poll for raising a loan of £lOO,OOO for the continuation of the harbor works shows 1211 votes for and 29 votes against the loan. A few small returns to come in will not affect the remit. LYTTELTON, This Day. Arrived—Hurunui, ship, Capt.Hazlewood, from London, with 62 passengers.
