THE SULTAN AND BAKER PASHA.
The Cotisiiintihopie correspondent of the " Times ” says “ The sudden departure of Baker Pasha to organise tne gendarmerie of Egypt gave rise to some unfounded rumours. It is not true; as asserted, that he left without giving notice to the Turkish Government. The Minister of Foreign Affairs (and the Sultan himself were duly informed by him of the proposal < which he had received from the Khe* dive, and of his intention to accept it. If ho had waited until the Sultan and his Ministers had finally made up their minds as to whether the mission should be approved, anduntiTall formalities for giving his resignation had been fulfilled, he would probably have arrived in Egypt some time next year, when his services would no longer be required. The wiser counsellors «f his Majesty desire that appearances' should be saved by approving the apS ointment, and retaining General laker’s name on the roll of the Turkish Army. But it is by no means certain that their advice will be adopted.” The Sultan is extremely vexed at Baker Pasha’s departure (says the Constantinople correspondent of the “Daily News”), and refusing at flrat to believe it, sent an officer to ascertain the truth. It is said that the Governors of Smyrna and Rhodes were ordered to arrest him, and that the Khedive has been commanded to send him back again.
