CORRESPONDENCE.

We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions expressed by our correspondents]. :o: TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I am pleased to see that you have taken up the cudgels, not so much in the cause of a single individual, as in a spirit of fair play, and knowing that when you hit, you hit hard and show no favor, I trust you will not let this matter about Mr John Drummond drop. As you say, if anything wrong has been connived at by the Borough Engineer, by all means let him be treated as he deserves, but if for private purposes certain Councillors wish to get rid of Mr Drummond (a gentleman of acknowledged skill and ability) to put in a pet of their own of whose talent we know nothing, I empastically say it is wrong and iniquitous. If those Councillors, or semi-engineers, possessed a spark of manliness, and were of opinion that Mr Drummond was not giving satisfaction, why not boldly make a direct assertion, and move that the Engineer be asked to resign ? But this is not the way they work. They insinuate certain laches, but have not got the heart to stand up in the Council and make an outspoken assertion that such is the fact. I hope that an investigation will be made, and if Mr Drummond be guilty he will be discharged, but if the Councillors are found to be wrong the ratepayers will ask them to resign a position which it will then be evident they are unfitted to hold. Thanking you for your able and fearlessly written article, I am, etc., A Ratepayer.
