A deputation waited on the Hon. Mr Johnston, at Dunedin, to-day, re Mr Caldwell’s removal from the governorship of the ! Gaol, which he has held for so many years. I The Minister replied that changes had to be made in the interest of the public service, and he could not hold out any hope of Mr. Caldwell’s retention there. In McNamara's case a deputation waited on the Hon. Mr Johnston, at Dunedin, and urged that the facts had not been fairly represented to the Government. Mr Johnston recommended them to send up a memorial. It is now known that the Hon Ivo Bligh’s team will not visit New Zealand. The Union Steam Shipping Company’s steamship Rotomahana left Melbourne for the Bluff yesterday. J. E. Redmond, M.P. for New Ross, Ireland, and one of the leaders of the Irish National League, is about to visit Australia to raise funds for the league. The sufferers by the late railway accident at Melbourne are progressing favorably. The list published gives 132 names of peroons injured, but includes many who have suffered but slightly. This morning the deputation appointed bj’ the Council lass evening interviewed Mr D. A. Tole, Commissioner of Crown Lands. The subject of water supply from Patutahi being the point under consideration. Crs. Clarke and Tutchen represented that there was a probability of the block No. 89, being situated so as to furnish a sufficient quantity and the Borough Council required time to take the particulars as to quantity, quality, and elevation. Mr Tole said that ho had received a letter from the Council, aud had immediately acted upon it, the result being that the Government had agreed to temporarily withdraw the land. Mr Tole desired that no time should be lost in making the necessary examination.
