Southern Cross Petroleum Company (Limited).
Mr Hilton, Engineer of the Company, reports, Dec. Ist: “ That the alterations to the boring machinery to suit the present shaft will l>e completed in few days. The shaft machinery and boring gear are now so fixed that further alterations will be unnecessary. The “ Gisborne brought three very heavy curbs. Ido not think it advisable to place them in the present quiet bottom, but am of opinion it would be more judicious to wait for the curbs by the return trip (22 were to be landed on the 4th inst). No increase of water in shaft. Oil stil oozing.” No obstacle now exists to rapidly sinking the shaft, which may be presumed to have commenced, and six feet daily ought to be accomplished.
