LAUNCH OF THE TARAWERA.
On September 30th (says the "European Mail ”) Messrs Dennj’ and Bros, launched from Leven Shipyards, Dumbarton, a steel screw steamer of 1950 tons gross measurement, for the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand. The dimensions of tha Tarawera at*—Length between perpendiculars, 285 ft. ; breadth (moulded), Sflft. ; depth, (moulded), 25ft. She has been constructed of Siemetie-Mertin steel, under special survey of Lloyd’s, and classed in their registry 100 Al, three-decked. She is built on the continuous cellular-bottom principle, wit# solid floors, and adapted for water ballast. Throughout the machinery space the structural system of deep plate-frames and holeside stringers has been adopted. She will have accommodation for 124 first-class passengers on main and upper decks, and 80 second-class passengers on main deck, The officers and engineers will be accommodMed in the midship side-houses under bridge deck, and the firemen and crew will occupy th. forecastle.
