GRATUITOUS FALSEHOOD.

“1 thank thee, Jew! for teaching me that word Sarah, in her rather more than commonly energetic style, accuses this journal of “gratuitous falsehood.” May wc enquire of the old lady where, and when ? Was it when we broached the subject of the Motu Road iniquity, or was it when we gently hinted that usury was disgraceful? Or was it when we related the little episode, which we mildly characterized as “sharp practice,” of the purchase of the “Herald," and Mr W. K. McLean's credulity being imposed upon ? Or was it the man from Alexandria? Or was it the Pilot Cottage extortion? or any of the thousand and one little peccadilloes in which wc have so freqnentlj’’ caught the dear old lady tripping? There is one thing certain, and that the old girl mav rest assured of. We are prepared to give proof of every word we have said if necessary, The particular “ gratuitous falsehood” alleged by Si.rah in the issue of the 29th ult. we conceive to be our statement regarding her being afraid to offend her customers by offering opinions on the election. Wc repeat it ! aad wc refer Sarah for proof t<> Mr U’rn. Adair. If Sarah uses the word falsehood to ns she must not be surprised if we retort with the lie direct to her. We meant, and are not afraid to answer for our meaning, as well as our words. We repeat our statement concerning Mr Adair, as also that regarding Mr W. K. McLean; the Motu Road; the Pilot cottages ; aud the man of Alexandria; and when Sarah talks to us about “gratuitous falsehood,” we would remind her that she is unable, and afraid, to come to us personally and frame a specific chaige to that effect.
