An adjournment for lunch was made at 1.30. Buchanan, Curtis, and Hocking to bat. DUNEDIN, This Day. A three-roomed cottage in the N. E. Valley, occupied by Daniel Chalmers, was burnt down last night. It was insured in the Standard office for £lBO. Additional particulars are to hand concerning the accident by which young Salmond, the manager of the Brushware Company, lost his life at the Maori Kaik. A party had gone up to the hill, and sat down under the shelter of the bushes. The soil here is very crumbly, and two horses above were grazing, and it is believed one shifted a boulder, which came tumbling down. A lady seated with Salmond called his attention to the danger, but had scarcely uttered the words when the stone struck him on the head with such force as to impel him fully 15 feet down the hill. He expired in five minutes afterwards. He was 23 years of age, and unmarried.
The Resident Magistrate’s Court House at Balclutha is stated to have been densely packed on Wednesday. A young man named McNeil was charged by Miss Chirnside with having shot at her with intent to kill. It was expected that the evidence taken would have revealed some very interesting features, but the case was withdrawn without any ■— evidence being taken at all, and, what was better, the respective parties, acting under their counsels’ advice, adjourned to the nearest Registrar's office, and were made man and wife before they were 20 minutes out of Court. George Fraser, of Puerua, has been charged at Balclutha with Arson, and was admitted to bail, himself in £3OO, and two sureties of £l5O each. Later. Two cases of sunstroke occurred last week at Queenstown, Lake VVakatipu. One was fatal to a little boy ten years old. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The Industrial Association are going to ask Government to offer a bonus for the discovery of a payable diamond field in New Zealand. During the discussion several men have mentioned that diamonds and other precious stones had been found in Malvern and in the West Coast district. The match between Canterbury and Auckland was commenced to-day on the Lancaster park ground. Ashby won the toss, and elected to go in. Watson and OUivier /faced the bowling of Lankham and Gill, ! when Watson scored five, and Ollivier was clean bowled. I—o—s. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency report, under date London, 28th November, that the wool market is unchanged. Seedy and Burry wools are neglected. Up to date 44,000 bales have been sold, and 500 withdrawn. It is stated that Sir John Hall, in consequence of his continued ill health, will shortly resign his seat for Selwyn and visit Europe, being absent probably for two years, Sir John, Lady Half, and family purpose leaving by the ship Lady Jocelyn which is expected to sail from here in January next. Suspicious circumstances have transpired in connection with the recent burning of the Cheltenham Saw-mills at Feilding. The New Zealand Insurance Company offers a reward of £5O for the conviction of the perpetrators of the crime. Detective Benjamin has arrived to make enquiries into the matter. The Customs duties last month were £18,600, showing an increase of £2500 over the corresponding month of last year. * The case of Hurrey v. Bank of New South Wales still occupies the Appeal Court, BALCLUTHA, This Day. The inquest held on the girl Eliza Smith, who fell out of a railway carriage, showed that death resulted from an accident, and that no blame teas attached to the railway officials.
