Mr Charles Coomber, of the Taranaki Hotel, New (Plymouth, lost about forty canaries one night lately, which were in the j aviary at the rear of his premises. The dead bodies of the birds were found in the morning, the greater portion being completely gnawed away. A rat hole w»s discovered in the wall at the side of the aviary, and it is supposed that a drove of rats must have attacked the birds during the night and killed them.
