AUSTRALIAN.
(by cable.— reuter’s telegrams). MELBOURNE, Nov. 28. Mr Beaney {sic) has instituted an action at lav/ against the proprietors of the “Argus” for having published an article commenting unfavorably upon his public career in connection with tne election proceedings. The damages are laid at £lO,OOO. The National Mortgage and Agricultural Association of New Zealand report the following as the latest market quotations :— Nothing doing in malting barley, and prices nominal. Shipping wheat is decidedly firmer at 5s Gd. New Zealand oats, fluty paid, are rather weaker at 3s 94 to 4s 2d for feeding qualities, and 4s 3d to 4s 4d for milling ditto. There is rather more enquiry for New Zealand oats in bond, and prices are less depressed; present quotations range from 3s 4d to 3s Bd. Prime hams are in good demand at Is 4d, and there is a fair demand for bacon at Bd. Owing to the recent heavy rains business is dull and bad, the weather having hindered the progress of harvest operations in the grain districts. Arrived, this morning—The P. & O. steamship Rosetta, with the inward Suez Mail, which left London on the 20th October. Tho Legislative Council Chamber was last night most successfully lighted by electricity. It is slated to be probable that Sir John Henry Lefroy will succeed Sir Wm. Robinson as Governor in West Australia.
