Dilke, Under-Secretary, Foreign Office, in reply to a question, stated that diplomatic communications are now passing between the English and French Governments regarding the Brazza Treaty, under which France 1 acquires certain territory in Madagascar. Mr G. C. Trevelyan, Chief Secretary for Ireland, stated, in reply to a question, that the Government are of opinion that the Unions are quite adequate to cope with the distress now prevailing in Ireland. Mr C. J. Kennard, Conservative, was today elected a member of the House of Commons for Salisbury, defeating Mr W. H. Grenfell, the former Liberal member, who, having accepted the position of Groom of the Chamber in the Queen’s Household, was obliged to seek re-election. Consols remain at 102. New Zealand soeurities are firm at the following quotations : —Five per Cent. 10.40 Loan 105{ f ; Five per Cent. 1889 Loan, 104, ex div.; Four-and-a- Half per Cent. 1879-1904 Loan, 102|. Adelaide wheat advanced to 49s 6d, ex store, and New Zealand to 44s to 475. Adelaide flour, ex store, risen to 345. Australian Tallow, best beef, 42s ; best mutton, 43s 6d. «
