We would refer our readers to the nominations for the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club meeting which is to take place on Boxing Day. The “ aesthetic opera bouffe,” by Gilbert and Sullivan, entitled, “ Patience,” should certainly attract a large audience. The papers in Auckland, speak very highly Indeed of the performance, and it is evident that a grand treat is in store for us. The Tambour Major Company numbers 62, and will arrive here on Friday by the Rotorua. They bring their own equipments, properties, and a large quantity of stage accessories, which will have to be landed, unpacked, fixed and arranged before a performance can take place. Mr Howard Vernon (Bunthome of “ Patience ”) is the stage managerr. His name is a guarantee that the stage business will be thoroughly organised. The principal members of the company we have already mentioned. In addition we may mention that Miss Elsa May, the prima donna, is the wife of Mr Boothroyd Fairclough, the celebrated tragedian whose name is a household word on the stage from England to Austi alia. Compliments to Miss Elsa May would be fulsome. We need only say that her singing fairly entitles her to the premier place in operatic circles. Already there lias been a great rush for tickets, and the amount advanced for the house by Mr S. Stevenson has already been secured.
Messrs Graham, Pitt and Bennett are instructed by Mr. J. Tutchen to offer for sale on the 29th instant, a number of eligible town sections. These sections are admirably adapted for working men, and are favorably situated on the Gladstone and Aberdeen roads. The terms are said to be exceedingly easy, and the sections in question should command a really good sale. A plan of the block will be on view at Messrs Graham, Pitt and Bennett’s offices on and after Thursday next. On Saturday next, at 3 o’clock, there is to be a meeting of the Gun Club for practice on the Whatanpoko. A red flag will denote the ground. On Saturday next, Messrs Carlaw Smith and Co. have been instructed to sell by public auction, at their mart, the privileges in connection with the forthcoming Annual Hospital Fete, and Volunteer and Friendly Societies Demonstration, which is to be held at the Whataupoko Block, on the 30th of November, Saint Andrew s Day. There will no doubt be a smart competition for the rights, as, given a fine day, there is sure to be a large crowd of people on the ground, and the privileges on these occasions mean something. That telegraph communication with Ormond will soon be an accomplished fact, is shown by a Government advertisement, calling for tenders for posts, &c., &c., to be distributed along the main road between that township and Makaraka. . “ Ye fayre of ye olden tyme ” is advertised in another column, and will be read with interest by some. Our somnolent reporter, however, went to sleep whilst thinking about it, but so far we are unable to relate his dream. No doubt he will tell us between this and to-morrow. Another “School Childrens’ Concert,” in aid of the Hospital Funds, is to be held in Parnell and Boylan’s Hall, on the evening of the 30th. Those who attended the last highly successful entertainment are not likely to lie absent on the coming occasion. On Friday Messrs. Carlaw Smith and Co. will sell by auction at Messrs. Kennedy and Bennett’s, spars, ropes, &c., being salvage from the Isabella, now lying on the beach at Pakirikiri.
