[per united press association], DUNEDIN, This Day, A fatal accident occurred yesterday to Thomas Sayers, aged 16, for years in the employment of Ritchie Baker at Port Chalmers. He was in the act of backing a horse into the shafts of a cart, and whilst he was trying to stop it the horse plunged and kicked him in the chest. He was immediately carried into the house, but expired before medical aid arrived. Three men dismissed from the Locomotive department sent in apologies admitting their insubordination, and undertaking, in future, to abstain from any action that would promote discontent among their fellow-workers. They have, accordingly, been reinstated at a lower rate of pay. The funeral of the late Mr James Seaton yesterday was largely attended. At the annual meeting of the Woollen Company the directors’ report recommending a dividend of 10 per cent, was adopted.

AUCKLAND, This day. At the inquest on the body of George Savage, at Kihikihi, a verdict of death by drowning was returned. There were no marks of violence, so the story of murder by the Natives was exploded. The horsewhipping case has been further adjourned. Intelligence has been received of the drowning of Capt. and J. Byland, late mate of the brigantine Clansman, by being washed overboard from the brigantine Bannockburn, on her voyage from Brisbane to Adelaide.

TIMARU, This Day. A man named Arthur Hine, residing near Geraldine, was killed by a fall from his horse on Monday evening. Mr Ritson, the agent of some English capitalists, who it is expected may be induced to take up the construction of the Thames and Te Aroha railway, has come up from Wellington, and will visit the Thames. John Weeks, whose leg was crushed in the bush on Saturday, died in the hospital of mortification last night. The deceased steadfastly refused amputation.

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The New Zealand Shipping Company announce that they have made arrangements for a monthly steam communication M’ith home, and have contracted for building a line of steamers of 4,000 tons gross register. Each of their fleet will be fitted with refrigerators. Pending the completion of their OM’n steamers they are chartering suitable vessels to begin the running at once. The first will leave London for Lyttelton direct on Jan, 20th, She is the British King, of 3,559 tons register. Dr Atkins, a very old and M’ell-known colonist, especially to visitors and residents on the Peninsula, died at Akaroa yesterday morning, at the age of 91. The deceased gentleman, who had been in feeble health for some time past, was the oldest member of the College of Surgeons, and likewise the oldest medical practitioner in the Colony. He M’as one of the original Canterbury “ Pilgrime,” having arrived here in the barque Cressy, the last comer of the famous first four ships bringing emigrants to Canterbury. To-day the Mayor, Mr Ruddenlaw, was presented with a magnificent testimonial of silver plate, in recognition of the manner in which he fulfilled the duties of the office during the International Exhibition. He was also presented with a gold locket for the Mayoress, Mrs Ruddenlaw.

WELLINGTON, This Day. Messrs Andrew Young and George Fisher were nominated to-day, for the Mayoralty. The election takes place on the 29th. In the Appeal Court to-day the case c Reynolds v. Napier was concluded, judgmen being reserved till to-morrow. Another Dunedin case, Connor v Mackay, will be taken. The girl Annie Freebody was surrendered to His Honor Mr Justice Richmond in chambers this morning, by virtue of a writ of habeas corpus, and afterwards delivered over to the custody of her sister. The ketch Elizabeth, M’hich went ashore near the entrance to the Otaki River recently, has been launched into the river, and does not appear to have received any injury. A cargo of frozen meat for the ship Lady Jocelyn, which is to load here in February, is already secured, application having been received from shareholders alone for space in excess of that at the disposal of the Wellington Meat Export Company.

NELSON, This Day. Mr Hursthouse, M.H.R., addressed his constituents at Upper Moretere last night, and received a vote of thanks and confidence. On the preceding night he spoke at Mohieka, and was paid a similar compliment.

GREYMOUTH, This day. From private advices it is learned that tenders have been called for in Melbourne to know at what rate ten thousand tons of Grey mouth coal could be conveyed from here and delivered in Melborune. NAPIER, This Day. Dr Spencer, the present Mayor, was duly nominated for the Mayoralty to-day. From the fact that thirty engineers have applied for plans and descriptions of the Napier Harbor, it is thought a good many designs for improvement works will be sent in. The accepted design obtains £5OO. Fine weather has now set in, and shearing is in active operation. It has been seriously retarded by the late unusual rains.
