At the close of the service in the Roman Catholic Church at Riverton, on Sunday last, Bishop Moran received an address of welcome from the Catholics of that portion of the diocese. In replying the Bishop referred to the condition of Italy under a foreign Government, and expressed his conviction that the anticipation as to the Pope’s restoration to his rights as a Temporal Sovereign will be realised at no distant day.

At a meeting of the Executive Council this morning, the case of Antonio Goschnell, recently found guilty and sentenced to death for murder near Normanby (Taranaki), was considered, and it was decided to commute the sentence to penal servitude for life. The Aurora was very brilliant last night. AUCKLAND, This Day. The horse-whipping case was remanded until Tuesday. The body of the man Savage has been found one mile from where he was believed to have attempted to cross the Manui river. TIMARU, This Day. Air John Jackson was elected Alayor, unopposed. John Green was sentenced to 12 months’ hard labour for brutally assaulting a policeman with a bottle, and biting one of his fingers off. The policeman’s head was terribly cut and bruised. DUNEDIN, This Day. Alessrs A. 11. Ross and J. B. Thompson are candidates for the Mayoralty. Alessrs Dalgety and Co. have received a cable message, dated London, 17th, to the effect that the market for frozen mutton has

advanced, and meat is now at 7d per lb for best quality. Jas. Renwick, insurance agent in Palmerston, was drowned yesterday. It is supposed he committed suicide. He leaves a wife and family in distressed circumstances. The following names are mentioned as candidates for the Peninsula constituency . —Larnach, Cutten, E. B. (Jargill, A. J. Burns, Donnelly, G. At the City Court to-day, two men named Barnett and Green were fined £5 for aiding in working the totalizator. Eight farmers in the Taieri district, have been fined for not taking sufficient steps for the extermination of rabbits. AUCKLAND, This day. The Rotorua, with the carbine champion, and the Thames and Auckland representatives, arrived at midnight. A dejeuner was held immediately afterwards. There is great dissatisfaction amongst the men at the treatment they experienced at Dunedin, A beautiful aurora australis was visible last night. PALMERSTON NORTH, This day. Mr William Dalrymple, formerly a member of the Otago Provincial Council, died at Awahuri, on Saturday, aged 83. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A deputation from the Railway League waited on the Commissioners and questioned them about their ability to take evidence on the subject of the line to the West Coast. In reply, Dr. Pollen said nothing was clearer from the terms of the Commission than that they were confined to the main trunk line northward ; a line from Amberley to Brunnerton could hardly lie called such an extension, but a deflection of the trunk line to westward of the main range. The Commission might consider a report on what the League presented. The Mayor aud others expressed an opinion that the mission of the Leaguers was useless. BLENHEIM, This Day. Air H. A smart shock of earthquake was experienced here yesterday evening at nine o’clock. It continued several seconds. At first it was slight and the direction undecided, but as it increased in violence and was distinctly from East to West. Later a brilliant Aurora was observed.
