At the City Court to-day, two men named Barnett and Green were fined £5 for aiding in working the totalizator. Eight farmers in the Taieri district, have been fined for not taking sufficient steps for the extermination of rabbits. AUCKLAND, This day. The Rotorua, with the carbine champion, and the Thames and Auckland representatives, arrived at midnight. A dejeuner was held immediately afterwards. A deputation from the Railway League waited on the Commissioners and questioned them about their ability to take evidence on the subject of the line to the West Coast. In reply, Dr. Pollen said nothing was clearer from the terms of the Commission than that they were confined to the main trunk line northward ; a line from Amberley to Brunnerton could hardly lie called such an extension, but a deflection of the trunk line to westward of the main range. The Commission might consider a report on what the League presented. The Mayor aud others expressed an opinion that the mission of the Leaguers was useless. BLENHEIM, This Day. Air H. A smart shock of earthquake was experienced here yesterday evening at nine o’clock. It continued several seconds. At first it was slight and the direction undecided, but as it increased in violence and was distinctly from East to West. Later a brilliant Aurora was observed.
