Death of the Rev. S. Hdgar.
(Krdih the Auckland Evening Star.) Ot'R London correspondent, writing under date, October 7th, says : It is njy painful duty to have to chronicle the sad and unex* pected death of the Rev. Samuel Edger, who arrived in England by tho ship Pareora on Tuesday, the 26th ultimo. The voyage,of.tl\e Pareora was much protracted oripg",tc cprt* trary winds, and Mr Kdgdr seems to have suffered much. Though the captain and..officers did what they could to make things comfortable, it was impossible to provide foqd, &c., suitable for an invalid growing dady worse, and when at length the vessel reached port, the rev. gentleman appenred In a most) exhausted condition, lie was immediately moved to the residence of his relations in Stockwell Park Road and placed under modical treatment, but from the first there little hope. For 48 hours Mr Edgar continued to take entail quantities of noiirishmenti but after that he reFilsed everything, and on Saturday, Septemb.’r 30, nt 1.20 p.m.; passed quietly away. The funeral took place at Nunlicad yesterday (Wednesday, October 4), lat one o’clock. It seems a sad pity that the , A uckland doctors should have permitted Mr Edgar to travel by a sailing ship which fiolthei* s carried a doctor nor was filled with rofrigeh ators (like Hie Matnbrh) for taking Ireclt , meat, fish and game. They must have fenowfi thdt bis disease would probably progress con- ' siderably, and that, the want of proper nour- ; ishment might load to serious results. [We learn that some of Mr Edgar's friends • endeavoured to persuade him to go home by ; steamer, but ho suffered so much pain by the jarring of engines on steamers that ho pre--1 ferred the risks of a sailing ship.]
