Old Jupiter put on his pluvins togs, Turned the water tap on the main ; He’d bet on the race, with Juno was riled, So was down on the ladies with rain. It was a most exciting scene, And very pretty view, To see so many well bred nags The Assyrian fleet pursue. Through mud and water gallantly They kept up the stern chase, ’ But Segenhoc he stood no show Of pulling off the race. Sweet William was a bitter pill To those outside the ring, And there were many who complained Of being stung by “ Sting.” So Cunnamulla, Little Jack Lost money for their friends ; Still often for a lift, a man Upon a horse depends. The “ Odd Trick ” proved a euchre to ! The folks who backed him up ; “Mistaken” quite misunderstood His changes for the Cup. Now here’s to Zoo Jumbo and other kind sweeps, Though I haven’t obtained any prize, We ought to be grateful to those who promote Such chances for getting a rise, —Auckland “ Free Lance.”
