RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.—GISBORNE.
This Day [■Before M. Price, Esq., R M.J LUNACY. Rowland Jeffs was charged on remand with lunacy. Dr. Leggatt was sworn and stated that he had examined the accused, and he was of opinion that he should be discharged. He considered that although not perfectly of sound mind he did not see anything to warrant his being detained in custody, or to restrain him from being at large. The accused was not a fit subject for a lunatic asyiiim. Dr. Pollen stated that he had examined the accused this morning. Ho talked very incoherently. He was not a fit subject for a lunatic asylum. He was safe to himself, and the public at large. He was perfectly harmless and not dangerous to himself and others. Drink had been the immediate cause of his present state. The accused would be better at large, and he considered that it would be a benefit for him to be at large, but that the police should have an eye on him. Accused had never to his knowledge snown any symptoms of violence. Dr. Pollen stated that the expenses of a patient of this description at the Hospital, the place where he considered was the most suitable for him, would be about £1 per week,
His Worship ; Then do you recommend me, Dr. Pollen, to send him to the Hospital, because 1 will do so at your request. Dr. Pollen said that there were no funds available for this purpose, but he thought the Government should be applied to in the matter. His Worship : Then, Dr. Pollen, do you recommend his discharge. Dr. Pollen: Under the circumstances, Ido. The accused was then discharged.
