This day. The Orient steamship Austral at anchor in the harbor this morning, sank about 4 a.m. She had been coaling. The vessel had a list to starboard, and the port holes being left open the water rushed in, and the vessel sank gradually in 45 feet of water. The masts and funnels are now alone visible. No lives were lost; sufficient time being allowed to enable the crew to get off’ to lighters, which were moored alongside, but which were quickly detached to provide refuge for the crew, wiio rushed out almost nude. They lost everything, and had a very narrow escape, as the occurrence only took a few minutes. The greater part of the Austral’s inward cargo had been discharged. Later, 1.30 p.m. The cause of the sinking of the Austral is now doubtful. The theory that the port holes were open is not believed. It is deemed most probable that the large valve near the bilge was left open. it is said that the purser and two engineers are missing, but it is not certain that they were on board. FIVE OF THE CREW DROWNED. The Austral’s position is unchanged. Divers have recovered the bodies of Parkins the purser, one of the engineers, and three seamen, Latest re Austral. The divers are still at work on the Austral. It is probable that the other bodies, those of several Araba firemen who are missing, will be recovered. An inquest on the bodies of the purser, engineer, and three seamen taken from the wreck yesterday will be held to-day. A railway accident occurred to-day on the western line near Bathurst. One lady passenger was seriously injured, and others suffering from slight wounds. The cause of the accident is said to have been a defect in the signals. The wharf lumpers who are now on strike, paraded the streets this morning in large number. It has been ascertained that the most serious case arising out of the railway accident which occurred near Bathurst on Saturday is that of a boy named Headland, who has both thighs seriously fractured. Signora v enosta and other members of the Turner Opera Troupe were passengers by the train, and were amongst those injured. It is deemed a miracle that all on board were not killed on the spot.
