The Right Rev. Dr. Luck, Roman Catholic I Bishop of Auckland, is expected to arrive in Gisborne en route for Auckland, by the s.s. I Wairarapa, on Sunday morning next. The 1 Catholic community have prepared an adi dress to be presented to His Lordship by a deputation of his flock, extending to him a most cordial welcome to New Zealand shores, and earnestly requesting that His Lordship : will be pleased to notice the spiritual wants of i his flock here resident, and in so doing supply a want that has been greatly felt among the Catholics of Poverty Ray, the advantage of having a pastor resident in the district. Father Vaggioli left us, in pursuit * of perhaps more arduous duties, but his place should be supplied without delay. His .Lordship and the Roman Catholic congregation have our hearty good wishes, and we need hardly say, sympathies. Protestants though we are, we cannot fail to admire and support righteous working to a righteous end. A rumour is afloat in town this afternoon i that Mr Devery’s Ferry Hotel at the Big ! River was burned to the ground this morning. We sincerely hope that this may prove • to be no worse than rumour. I Mr S. M. Wilson of the Albion Club Hotel intimates that a five-horse brake will | run to the races on Thursday and Friday, the 9th and 10th instant, in order to convey visitors to the races. Other conveyances will also run throughout the day. Mr J. Allanach in our advertising columns , calls attention to his hotel at Tologa Bay, and states that he has excellent accommodation for travellers, splendid paddocking, I which cannot be equalled on the Coast, and , a very excellent billiard-room. We wish Air ' Allanach every success. ’ Mr H. C. Boylan offers a reward of £1 to : tlic finder of a dark bay mare lost by him. ' A foot-race of 150 yards is on the tapis between a visitor, who once was the cham- , pion sprint runner of New Zealand, and one of the speediest of our local “peds.” The i match is for £2O a side, and the first deposit ■ has been put down.

' Messrs Carlaw Smith and Co., in conjunc- ! tion with Messrs. Graham, Pitt, and Bennett, . will sell at Bushmere, on Monday, the 20th ; instant, all Mr Poynter’s valuable" household furniture and effects; also some good carriage horses, waggonette harness, &c. Par- ; ticulars of the sale will shortly appear. We (Wairoa Guardian) are the bearer of an invitation from Poverty Bay to the Wairoa Jockey Club to make a somewhat singular | addition to their programme. On a recent I occasion at the Roseland Hotel, Makaraka, i when the subject of the forthcoming Wairoa , race meeting was brought up, a noted local bullock-puncher, Phelps by name, better i known by his soubriquet of “the Marquis,” ‘ offered to run a bullock—and ride it himself : —against any animal of the same kind in the ! Wairoa county. We commend the matter j to the consideration of the local Jockey i Club ; a bovine race would certainly be a most novel and attractive feature, and agreei ably diversity to the proceedings. We hope, j for the reputation of the district, that this ; nobleman’s challenge will be taken up. i Mr W. P. Finneran calle for tenders for j the erection of a verandah, and sundry addii tions and alterations to the house of Mr CarI law Smith. Plans and specifications to be I seen at Mr Finneran’s office in Childers-ssreet. j Tenders to close at noon, on Saturday, 11th I of November. I An announcement appears in another j column to the effect that lunch may be ob- ■ tained to-morrow, from 12 to 3 o’clock, at : the Roseland Hotel. We would remind the members of the J ‘ Battery that the usual weekly parade takes place to-night instead of to-morrow night on 1 account of the holiday. i Mr R. H. Fisher notifies that he will offer j for sale 36 town allotments, and section No. | 12, the property of Mr W. Clarke. For | further particulars see advertisement. ' Printers, like other people, sometimes 1 want a holiday. Even the!) wants one. iSo to meet all views, D ’s and all, we ! propose not to issue a paper on Friday, that i 1 being the day on which the D has ' elected to lark round. j , Mails for Napier, per Oreti, will close on l Friday afternoon, at 3 o’clock. ; The case trumped up by Captain Tucker i re \\ ard and Honi Kewa was : dismissed by the Judges. How poor Tucker must suffer !I ! More about this in a day or I two
