The hour approaches, but the man ; where is he ? Who is he whom the people will delight to honor ? Burgesses have to exercise a very fine discretion in their votes for the respective candidates, two in number, for the Mayoralty, vacant by the retirement, by effluxion of time, ofthe present Mayor, C. D. Bennett, Esq., who has during the pastyear satisfactorily filled the office ef Chief Magistrate of Gisborne town. The two candidates presenting themselves are both men of known reputation for their business capacities and integrity. Messrs Henry Lewis and Edward Knight Brown are willing to give their services to the interests of the town for the ensuing year. Of two candidates we must cleet one, and for our part without in any way attempting to depreciate the very well known merits of the gentleman in opposition, wc elect to advocate the cause of Mr. Henry LewiThe grounds on which wc act may perhaps be readily adapted 011 a minor scale to the antecedents of the antagonistic party. Mr. Lewis is one of the oldest colonists living in Gisborne, and is certainly an older hand at affairs municipal than his opponent. So far as the respect and esteem in which both gentlemen are held by their fellow townsmen is concerned, there can be no invidious comparison ; both of them deservedly commanding the confidence ofthe ratepayers, ami the community generally. We advocate Mr. Lewis’s election to the office’ofChief Magistrate with the greater confidence because the respective merits < ‘ the contending parties being so equally balanced we feel sure that the seniority of that gentleman as a colanist and a business man cannot l:e without its weight in the scale. We say “Vote for Lewis.’ His views on matters municipal arc not strange to us. We have heard them time after time, ami can honestly vouch for their being thoughtful, advanced, and liberal. In every question of importance which has arisen in the Borough Council Mr. Lewis has evinced an amount of sagacious knowledge and ta- t which of ’.hemselves should be a passport to the hi arty support of ratepayers in the forthcoming' election : ami will without doubt bear its due weight on the polling day. To those who have the interests of the town at heart wc say go straight to the polling booth and plump for Lewis, and while wishing Mr. E. K. Brown every success, other than on the occasion in question, wc sincerely trust that the numbers recorded at the close of the poll will return Mr. Henry Lewis to the very important post of Mayor of Gisborne.
