SPORTING.
Moraing Gallops at MakarakaThe morning was fine and the work commenced early. Tartar was the first to strip, and did three miles at half speed and finished as plucky as a bull dog. His sty[e of going was much admired. Seaboy followed doing a fast mile, and showed a good turn of foot. He finished his journey apparently without being distressed in the least.
Gundagai was indulged in a mile canter, but has evidently not quite recovered frsm a slight accident he met with recently. Slim Jim and Erictiionius went a mile together at full bat, and the “ slight one ” had altogether the best of the handsome little grey, who possesses a name as long as itself. Slim Jim is looking remarkably well, and will no doubt run at the coming meetings a thoroughly good horse. The little horse will probably be much improved by the 9th. The next to appear was Director, and I must certainly compliment Mr Geo. Burnand on the appearance of this once much fancied son of Papapa. He is greatly improved and showed that his trainer has spared no pains to get him fit. The horse was much admired in consequence of his altered appearance. His first mile was cantered, but the second was at half-speed. Director moved well and came home as fresh as he started.
Gisborne did two miles at half-speed, but owing "to the state of his leg his work has been light, and consequently nis exercise this morning showed that his pipes are not so open as they should be. Cat did a good serviceable gallop of two miles. This handsome little animal is looking remarkably well, and like his stable companion Director, reflects the greatest credit upon Mr Burnand’s care and attention to horses placed under his charge. Forest King was sent for a fast mile and slipped along in really good style. Trovatore, Seagull, and some other horses did walking exercise.
I missed from the course Mr H. Towsey’s mare Filthy Lucre, and regret it, as I am of opinion she requires more work. It is an old stable saying that a day’s spell puts on five pounds of fat, and as this speedy little animal has too much beef already. I can only hope that her owner will, during the fnext few days, keep her at constant work. Hotspur. Melbourne Oup Winner. Stockwell went away at the start and remained at the front for the whole of the way attended by Flying Jib, Gudarz and Little Jack. They ran in much this order until the distance was reached, where Darebin looked dangerous, but his weight (9st 91b) told on him. Assyrian then came in flying and won by half a-length, the same distance separated the 2nd and 3rd horses. Time : 3mins 40secs. The inclement weather greatly marred the success of to-days meeting. MELBOURNE COT RACE[special TO PRESS ASSOCIATION'.*! MELBOURNE, Oct., 31. It is estimated that there were at least 80,000 people on the course. Pleasure spectators were however marred after the first race, as rain commenced to fall and continued steadily until after the Cup race which was run amidst a team downpour. The win of Assyrian is a remarkably good one for the Bookmakers as ho was scarcely ever mentioned in the doubles, and was only backed straight out for very moderate amounts. Had Sweet William won the ring would have been completely ruined. The race was a grand one. Twenty-four horses faced the starter, and at the post Sweet William was a strong favorite at 5 to 2, Mistaken sto 1, Little Jack 8 to 1, Odd Trick 100 to 8, Stockwell 100 to 7, Sting 100 to 6 and the same about King of the Vale, Darebin, Assyrian, Savanaka, Cunnamulla and Sylvanus were at 100 to 5, and the others from 100 to 2 to 100 to 4. The start was an excellent one. Mistaken went off with a slight lead and held it for a few yards, Santa Claus and Pollio being close attendants but before the turn was reached Flying Jib rushed to the front and held the lead for a few moments when Stockwell came up and assumed the command, and went at a rattling pace quite clear of the ruck, Sweet William, Gudarz and Sylvanus following and after an interval Segenhoe, Mistaken, Odd Trick and Jessie, the balance of the field being close behind with Lord Burghley bringing up the rear. When passing the grand stand the first time round Stockwell led by a length followed by Flying Jib, Gudarz, Sweet William and Sylvanus with Jessie, Santa Claus, Mistaken and Segrnhoe next, followed by Lord Lisgar and Pollio with Lord Burghley still last. At the end of the firat half mile, Little Jack was Ist, Gudarz 2nd, and Mistaken 3rd,- fel’mwvd by Flying Jib, Sweet William, and Odd Trick, all wdl together, some four lengths behind came Darebin, Assyrian, Segenhoe and Cunnamulla side by side, and Sting trying conclusions with Lord Burghley for last place. Near the slaughter yard Mistaken came up with a rush, and took third place but the pace was too warm and he soon dropped back completely beaten. Stockwell maintained the lead until the turn home, when Assyrian, with a grand rush joined Darebin Gudarz and Segenhoe, who were a couple of lengths behind, while prominent amongst the next contingent were the colors of Sweet William, Little Jack, Lord Lisgar, and at the turn into the straight Assyrian passing Darebin, "Sweet William, and Gudarz nobly answered the call, and came very fast to the front. Darebin made a splendid effort to keep pride of place, but after a splendid finish Assyrian won by half a length from Stockwell, while Gudarz about the same distance to rear in third place, Sweet William fourth, Darebin a good fifth, the next horses being Segenhoe, Sylvanus, Flying Jib, Pollio, and Sting in the order named. Time, 3tnin. 40sec. The victory of Assyrian did not seem to greatly meet the favor of the public who strongly supported Sweet William, Little Jack, Cunnamulla, and Sting to the last. The ring, however, gain largely on the Cup although they lost on all the other races of the meeting so far the favorites in every case winning easily and being heavily backed.
MELBOURNE, This Day. There was a very large attendance at Tattersails last night, and the ring appeared in much better spirits than they have been in since the Derby was run. The victory of Assyrian saved them from very book on the double, as Navigator had been taken very large by the public in the doubles with most of the Cup favorities. The starting price of Assyrian was 100 to 3 ; the colt is owned by Mr Allison, of Adelaide, theatrical agent, and Mr Barnfield, an Adelaide bookmaker. They win £BOOO by his victory. Jones, a stockbroker of Ballarat, backed Assyrian to win £2OOO, and Allen and Joseph, of Melbourne, each laid him in the double with Navigator for £lOOO each. There are novery large winners amongst the ring, and, taking the meeting throughout, the public have had the best of the betting, the ring being hit in eleven out of twelve events. The public were grievously disappointed about the performance of Sweet William, Little Jack, Mistaken, and Sting, all of whom were held in very heavy doubles with Navigator, and appeared so good that very little was laid off, in doubles under £lOOO thev were also extensively held, but most of the money was laid off by the small investors as soon as they got one leg in. Nothing has transpired as to the dividends on the Totalizators, but they must have been large. No announcement has been made as to where the prizes in the big Consultation have gone.
