Proposed Electric Light Company.

A meeting was held last night at the South- 1 cm Cross Company’s Office, of those who ‘ had interested themselves some time back in the formacion of a Gas Company. Mr W. Adair was moved to the chair. The proceed- ; ■ ings were of a very satisfactory nature and ■ took a thoroughly business-like and practical , turn. Owing to the progress made in lighting by means of electricity the idea of forming a Gas Company had been allowed to rest in abeyance for some time, and Mr W. Clarke had been gathering data relative to the former. He now estimated the cost of all the plant and appliances necessary to supply 1000 lights at £3,500. He suggested that a plan be prepared showing the position. of the buildings in the most densely occupied portion of the town, their distance apart, etc., and further that a tender for the supply of the plant be obtained from England. The gentlemen present fully concurred in ; idea and were unanimously of opinion th:it I the time had arrived when something should be done to provide for the better lighting of the town. Mr Maude thought the Borough Council should make a Company formed with the > object they had in view, some concessions. Mr Adair said that it was high time that ; some improvement was made in the lighting ■ of the Borough. Should they not be able to obtain the electric light he thought they , should still hold on to the idea of the Gas Company. After some further conversation it was resolved that a letter be written to the Borough Council asking whether that body has any intention of lighting the town, aud if not, whether they will grant the concession so to do to a Company. . It was then agreed that in the event of the Borough Council declining to light the town ' a Committee consisting of Messrs Clarke, : Adair, and Maude be appointed to have a plan prepared showing all the tenements and the probable number of lights required, and to transmit it to England with the view of obtaining tenders as to the cost of all necessary plant delivered in the Poverty Bay roadstead. Tenderers to agree to send out with the machinery one skilled man under engagement for a term of three years at a salary not to exceed £3OO a year. The acting Secretary was requested to communicate with Messrs Porter and Co., of Auckland, asking for any information they might be able to furnish. Mr F. J. Piesse was requested and consented to act as Secretary, and the meeting was brought to a close by a vote of th auks to the Chairman.
