SPORTING.

MORNINa GALLOPSMAKARAKA. There was a good attendance on the Makaraka race-course this morning, and some useful, if not fast, work was done. Seaboy was the first to strip, and went two miles at a steady pace. This youngster appeared to be in good heart, and, although only doing slow work, showed a lot of quality and finished strong. Seagull stripped at the back of the course, and did a good useful gallop twice round the course. In the second round, the Gull was joined by a very speedy hack, owned by Mr J. Price, so I learned. The former, as I have previously predicted, is an improving horse, and I am confident will some day make his mark when negotiating sticks. The Barb, in bandages, did two miles with Mr A. Davis, up but his style certainly did not impress me. Trovatore followed, but galloped some what awkwardly. However, this impression may have been obtained through the fact that the horse was not let out.

Luck’s All did useful work, with Jemmy Redman up, and finished as strong as a lion. Eiuctonius, owned by Mr J. Carroll, is a handsome little grey showing a deal of quality and a lot of foot. In the two and a half miles gallop thia morning, with which he was indulged, he gave proof that, with a light weight up, he is a hard one to beat.

Old Carnival, looking as gay as ever, was treated to a three mile steady canter, and did not appear to be satisfied when his exercise was over. He is a bit on the big side, but is one of those stout and true sort who never know when they’re beaten, and I expect him to run very forward on the 9th November.

Gisborne exercised in clothing, going two miles. He is rather too beefy, and lam afraid that shoulder of his will prevent him from being got thoroughly fit. However, he is a game little bit of stuff, and should his leg hold out, (may gain a place in the Handicap.

Forest King was the next to appear, and did a useful gallop of two miles. This horse slides along very easily and with great power. He should be ticketed dangerous in any of the events he is entered for. Mr Hubert Towsey’s chestnut marc was the next on the scene. I was unable to obtain her pedigree, but can only say that she is a most taking animal. She is somewhat big, but her owner who is, with the assistance of Mr J. Carroll, training her, will have her perfectly fit on the Prince of Wales’ Birthday. Mr Towsey occupied the pigskin this morning, but did slow work only for the greater part of the distance. The mare is in excellent heart, and so full of pluck that she ran off the course just at the finish. However, it will not be difficult to break her of this habit. Slim Jim was on the ground, but up to the time I left, did no work. I may mention that the course has been greatly improved, and that additions have been made to the grand stand, which very much increases the accommodation. 0- J. o. Keetinff. [Keuter’s Special.] Melbourne Cup Scratchings. MELBOURNE, Oct. 30. The following horses have been scratched for the Cup since 11 a.m. when the last forfeit was paid :—Boolka, Navigator, and Guesswork. Later. It is probable that the following horses will not start for the Cup to-morrow :—Lord Burghley, First Water, Segenhoe, Flying Jib, Essex, Brunette and The Queen. This will leave twenty-two horses in the field. This Day. The weather to-day is very hot, and a high wind is blowing. Twenty-nine horses still remain in for the Cup. No change has taken place in the betting since last night. Melbourne Cup SottingThe following is the betting on the Melbourne Cup : — Sweet William ... 5 to 2 Little Jack ... ... 6to 1 Mistaken 7 to I Sting 12 to 1 i Cunnamulla 15 to 1 ■ Sylvanus ... ... 15 to 1 Darebin ... ... 20 to 1 King of the Vale ... 20 to I ; Savanaka ... ... 2() to 1 Pollio 20 to 1 Odd Trick 25 to 1

(Special to press association.) I Melbourne Cup News. MELBOURNE, Oct. 30. . Received 3.40 p.m. Oct. 30. The weather still continues fine, and is all that can be desired. The running in the Derby has injured the position of Navigator in the Cup betting. The stable seem confident about Sweet William, and he is being backed quietly, but heavily, at 5 to 1. Little Jack and Mistaken are freely supported at 7 to 1. Cunnamulla is at 10 to 1. Sting 100 to 8, (offered.) Sylvanus 100 to 5 (taken.) Boolka, Belmont King of the Vale, The Drummer, and Calma 100 to 3 (offered.) Wagering is paralysed and there is nothing important doing as the ring is waiting for hedging money. Visitors in crowds are arriving by every train. Navigator and Segenhoe are improbable starters for the Cup. (Received Oct. 10.40 p.m.) The weather is very hot and training is slow. This morning Darebin did a two mile gallop very strongly and finished well. Savanaka went two miles over the sand track in 3min lljsecs, the last mile being done in hnin 41sec, which is a very good performance. Cunnamulla did a good serviceable gallop. Sweet William, Gudarz and Santa Claus did a good mile and a quarter, the first named finishing well. The settling on the Derby is very satisfactory. Sweet William or Little Jack should win the Cup. The best outsiders are Stockwell and Belmont. Melbourne Oup Bettlnj.

100 to 3 to 100 to 5 about the others. (Received Oct. 31st, 1.38 p.m.) The weather is fine but blowing hard, aud the dust is something fearful. There was excitement throughout the city last night, and it was long after midnight before the betting rooms were closed. Sweet William was firm at 100 to 35 and was heavily backed. A small amount was invested on Mistaken at 3 to 1. 100 to 20 was offered, and 6to 1 was wanted, about Little Jack. 100 to 12 was taken about Cunnamulla. 100 to 10 offered, and 100 to 8 wanted about Darebin who is being backed by the stable. 100 to 3, 100 to 4 and 100 to 5 have been taken about Lord Lisgar to win £lO,OOO. 100 to 2 has been taken for a few thousand abont Odd Trick. Pollio, Stockwell, King of the Vale, Savanaka and Standard Bearer all find persons to back them freely at 100 to 2.

The following is the betting :— Sweet William 100 to 40 (off) Mistaken 100 to 18 (off) Little Ja k 100 to Ifl (off) Sting 100 to 0 (off) Odd Trick 100 to 7 (tk) Savanaka 100 to 7 (tk) Sylvanus 100 to 7 (off) King of the Vale ... 100 to (off) Stockwell 100 to 7 (off) The Assyrian 100 to 6 (off) Darebin 100 to 7 (off) Jessie 100 to 7 (off)
