MELBOURNE RACES. [Reuter’s Special.] MELBOURNE, Oct. 28. The attendance at the races was good, and the weather fine. The Governor was absent owing to the death of the Dowager Marchioness Normanby. The betting was even on Darebin. Mr E. De Mestre’s bl o Navigatorl Ffyingpan 2 Sec en hoe ... 3 —The following horses also started : Calma, Aidc-de-Camp. Boolka, Fryingpan, King of the Vale, Transferred, Standard Bearer, Guesswork, and Navigator, The betting at the post wan even on Navigator. 3 to 1 Segennoe, 6 to 1 Guesswork. 8 to 1 Boolka, 10 to 20 to I against others. i Time : 2mins. 41 Jjseos. A good start was effected, Dina showed first to the front. Delusion close alongside. The field were well together ut the carriage paddock, when Narina shot out and won comfortably by a length. Time: Imin 41isecs. Melbourne Cup Betting. There is very little betting on the Cup. Received 12 Noon, Oct. 28. The forenoon was overcast, and threatening, but no rain fell, there was however a cold wind blowing, the attendance is estimated at 30,000, and the lawn presented a Sarticularly brilliant appearance for a Derby ay. His Excellency the Marquis of Normanby was not present owing to the recent death of his mother. The course was in excellent condition, and ton candidates for j the— Melbourne Derby faced the starter. The betting at the post was even on Navigator, Segenhoe 7 to 1, Guesswork 6 to I, Fryingpan 10 to 1, Boolka 10 to 1, Standard Bearer 100 to 6. King of the Vale 100 to 3, Calma 100 to 4. Calma was very fractious at the start, and there were three false starts, but when the flag fell finally the start was an excellent one, Guesswork was first to show in front, with Boolka and Aide-de-Camp in close attendance, almost in a cluster came Calma, Segenhoe, Fryingpan, and Transferred, followed by Standard Bearer with King of the Vale last ; as they came round the turn Guesswork took the lead closely followed by Transferred, Boolka, Aide-de-Camp, Calma, Fryingpan, Navigator, and King of the Vale being close up. Transferred sopn made an effort and deprived Guesswork of Ist place, and at the end of the first half nfile was half a-length ahead of Guesswork, who had a lead of some six lengths from Boolka, while two lengths behind came Segenhoe, Navigator, King of the Vaio and Standard Bearer all close together at the back of the course, ; Guesswork and Transferred were leading : close together, while Calma and Fryingpan were in close attendance, Segenhoe, Stan- ' dard Bearer and King of the \ ale being next close up, near the slaughter yard Transferred again showed in front Yvith a lead of half a length from Guesswork, Yvhile two lengths behind came Fryingpan and Boolka, then Segenhoe. Calma and King of the Vale, Navigator being last half a-milc from home, Transferred and Guesswork wore running neck and neck Fryingpan, Segenhoe, Standard Bearer, and Navigator close up, and the rest of the field evidently outpaced. Transferred and Guesswork were still leading as they entered the straight, with Fryiagpon 3rd, Segonhoo> Standard Bearer . and Navigator coming up. Approaching the } distance post Navigator began to close up I on Fryingpan, and soon secured 3rd place, 1 followed cloruly l:y Segenhoe, At the 1
carriage paddock it was evident that Guesswork and I ransferred were done, Segenhoe had the lead for a moment, but was quickly passed by Fryingpan and Navigator, the latter winning rather easily by a length and a-half, Fryingpan being about a quarter of a-length in front of Segenhoe, the others comingm in the following order /Guesswork, Transierred, Calma, and King of the Vale. Time : 2mins 41 J,secs. Navigator s victory Yvas a very popular one, but is bad for the Bookmakers who have been hit heavilv. There was great excitement at the finish. Melbourne Cup Payments.
