SOUTHERN CROSS PETROLEUM COMPANY (Limited.)
The report (fortnightly) from Mr G. P. Hilton was received last night by mail, and is dated the 20th instant. This report coincides with that made by the two visiting directors, and the very welcome news that the shaft is now in firm ground will give considerable relief to the shareholders, who have been kept in much anxiety, owing to the plasticity of the clayey stratum overlying. Mr Hilton says that the bottom is quite good; vent free ; oil and water coming up No. 3 bore, of which there is only one length —eight feet—to recover. It is hoped that no further difficulties will be met with in sinking. The directors are considering tha desirability of re-commencing boring. The total depth obtained is 153 feet 7 inches.
