Another literary venture; The first number of Mr Joseph Mackay's new paper, the “Southern Free Press” is to hand. It is published simultaneously at Wyndham, Mataura Bridge, Gore and Invercargill. That the proprietor is sanguine of his prospects, and has faith in his ability to produce a high-class paper would appear from this statement: —“ We are fully determined to make the “Southern Free Press” quite us welcome a visitor to the homes and firesides of Otago and Southland as any existing organ, the far-famed “ Witness ” itself not excluded.” The paper is an eight-paged one, containing 64 lengthy columns. Mr McKellar, squatter paid £45 for a special train from Ballarat to Hamilton in order to return home after attending the funeral of a jockey killeed while riding one of his horses at Ballarat.
